“Americans, discarding the historic friends and allies they worked so hard over centuries to nurture and support, are instead starting to beg the lesser nations they once scorned — tyrannies, dictatorships, mafia-ocracies — for friendship, support, and parternship.”

“Americans” are not doing this. But they (we) are tolerating it–which in a ways is even more shocking.
